Tuesday 4th March Champions League Football Preview

This Tuesday we have four matches to preview with you from the knockout phase of the Champions League, the first game comes from the Jan Breydel Stadium where Club Brugge will host Aston Villa. The two sides met earlier in the competition at this stadium with Club Brugge coming off the better winning 1-0, the goal came from the spot after Tyrone Mings conceded a hand ball and Hans Vanaken converted the penalty.

The homeside beat Atalanta convincingly 5-2 on aggregate in the last round but Nick Hayen’s side haven’t been in good current form in the Pro League where they have drawn two and lost one of their last three games. They drew away at St Truidense (2-2), lost at home to Standard Liege (1-2) and drew away at Gent (1-1).

The visitors Aston Villa finished 8th in the table so they avoided the first knockout phase of the competition, they won five, drew one and lost two. They will hope they can avenge the defeat they had here and take an advantage back to Villa Park for the second leg. Unai Emery’s have slipped down to midtable in the Premiership after a great start to the season but they will arrive at this game on the back of a victory in the FA Cup at the weekend, where they beat Cardiff at home 2-0. The new signing Marco Asensio scored both of the goals.

The second game of the evening will come from the Signal Iduna Park with Dortmund hosting Lille, the homeside beat Sporting 3-0 on aggregate in their first knockout game. Niko Kovac’s side are only midtable in the Bundesliga but they have won their last two games at home to Union Berlin (6-0) and away to St Pauli (0-2). Serhou Guirassy has scored 5 goals in his last two games so he will be a great asset in this tie for the homeside.

The visitors Lille are 5th in Ligue 1 but after putting two victories together away to Rennes (0-2) and at home to Monaco (2-1) they lost at the weekend away to top of the table PSG losing 4-1 at the Parc des Princes. This will be a hard tie for them but they will hope to get on the scoresheet here.

The third game of the night will come from the Philips Stadion where PSV welcome Arsenal for the first leg. The homeside beat Juventus 4-3 on aggregate to get to this stage but in the Eredivisie they are now 5 pts behind leaders Ajax after losing one and drawing three of their last four league matches. Peter Bosz’s side have conceded nine goals in those four games so they will need to tighten their defence if they want to bypass Arsenal into the next round.

The visitors Arsenal have slipped to 13 pts behind Liverpool in the Premiership table, Mikel Arteta’s side dropped points at home to West ham losing 0-1 and then drew 0-0 away at 3rd place Forest. They will arrive here fresh as they had no FA Cup match at the weekend after being knocked out earlier to Man United.

The final game of the evening is a Madrid Derby where Real host Atletico at the Bernabeu, the two sides met here in La Liga a couple of week’s ago where it finished 1-1. Carlo Ancelotti’s side beat Man City 6-3 on aggregate to get to this stage with in form striker Kylian Mbappe scoring a hattrick. The homeside will come into this tie on the back of a disappointing defeat away to Real Betis where they took the lead but lost 2-1 resulting in them slipping to 3rd in the title race.

The visitors Atletico Madrid are top of La Liga after a 1-0 victory at home to Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona have yet to play but in the worst way they will be second and just a point behind. Diego Simone’s side also drew 4-4 away to Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final coming from 4-2 down to score two late goals. We can expect a tight two leg affair here but who will come out on top overall.
