Thursday 6th March Europa League Football Preview

We have four early games from the Europa League on Thursday, the first one we will look at comes from the AFAS Stadion where AZ will host Tottenham. AZ Alkmaar are sitting in 6th in the Eredivisie, with ten games remaining of the season the best they can hope for is a spot in Europe next season. Maarten Martens side lost at the weekend away at Heerenveen (3-1) which brought to an end a seven game unbeaten run in all competitions. The two sides met in this competition earlier where the English club won 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium.

The visitors Spurs have climbed up to 13th in the Premiership after victories away at Brentford (0-2), at home to Man United (1-0) and away at Ipswich (1-4). They did lose their last game but that was at home to Man City where just the one goal in the game was the difference between the two sides (0-1). We can expect a close game here.

The second game we will look at comes from the National Arena where FCSB will host Lyon, the Romanian club are top of the Superliga but just four points separates first and fourth position with one game remaining of the season. Elias Charalambous’s side know a win at home to U. Craivoa this week will win them the title, they beat PAOK 4-1 on aggregate to get to this point of the competition.

The visitors Lyon are 6th in Ligue 1 and with ten games left of the season the best they can hope for is a top 4 position, Paulo Fonseca’s side have won three and lost two of their last five league games with the won loses being five goal thrillers away at Marseille (3-2) and at home to PSG (2-3). The French side will need to tighten their defence if they want to win this two leg tie.

The next game to look at is from Turkey where Fenerbahce will welcome Rangers at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, the Turkish side sit second in the table with four points adrift of leaders Galatasaray with eleven games remaining. Jose Mourinho’s side beat Anderlecht 5-2 on aggregate in the last round and will arrive here on the back of two wins away at Gaziantep in the cup (1-4) and at home to Antalyaspor in the league (3-0). 

The visitors Rangers are booked for second place in the Scottish Premiership, Barry Ferguson’s side have lost two two of their last four league games both at home to St Mirren (0-2) and more recently to Motherwell (1-2). The Scottish side will hope to remain in this tie and make it decided at Ibrox the following week.

The last game of the early games comes from the Reale Arena where Real Sociedad will host Man United, the homeside lost last time they played United here three years ago in this cup but Imanol Barrenetxea’s side have possibly improved past their opponents since. They sit 9th in La Liga and arrive here losing their last two games, at home to Real Madrid in the semi-final of the Copa del Rey (0-1) and then away to Barcelona in the league (4-0). We can expect a tight tie between these two clubs.

The visitors Man United are 14th in the Premiership but they did win their last league game 3-2 against Ipswich, Ruben Amorim’s side suffered a disappointing 5th round FA Cup exit at the weekend losing at home to Fulham 4-3 on penalties. The Manchester club needs to bounce back quickly as this is the only chance of silverware this season now.
