We just had the two games from the top tier of English football this afternoon but neither disappointed the neutrals with nine goals between the two matches. The first game came from St James’ Park where Newcastle were hosting Nottingham Forest, when the two sides met earlier in the season it ended 3-1 to Newcastle so we were expecting goals in the second contest.
Newcastle started the day in 7th position with a chance of jumping up a couple of places with a victory, things didn’t go to plan for Eddie Howe’s side with Callum Hudson-Odoi putting Forest one goal up after just 6 minutes. The homeside were looking for a quick equaliser but that didn’t come until the 23rd minute when young Lewis Miley netted with a left footed shot from the centre of the box.
Just two minutes later Jacob Murphy put Newcastle ahead from close range, on the half an hour mark VAR awarded Howes side a penalty and up stepped leading goal scorer Alexander Isak to score. Then that man Isak scored a minute later on the break with Joe Willock assisting, the first half ending 4-1 to Newcastle.
There wasn’t a six goal till the 63rd minute when Nikola Milenkovic slotted in from close range for Forest to make it 4-2, the game went very quiet from then on until Ryan Yates got another for the away side in injury time to make it 4-3. It was a great game of football but the homeside did deserve the three points which lifted them up to 5th in the table while Forest remained in 3rd place.
The second game of the afternoon came from the Etihad where Man City had a chance to jump into 3rd with Forest dropping points earlier. They were up against top of the table Liverpool who hadn’t lost a league match since mid September when they got beat by Forest 1-0. Pep’s side was without the injured Erling Haaland so started with Phil Foden up top.
It took the visitors just 14 minutes to score with Mohammed Salah hitting the top right hand corner from the centre of the box, striker Dominik Szoboszlai doubled the lead for Slot’s side after 37 minutes with Salah assisting the left footed strike.
They went into halftime 2-0 and in the 58th minute VAR overturned Curtis Jones’s goal to make it 3-0. The game started to open up then with two minutes later VAR ruled Man City out of a goal to bring it back to 2-1. It looked more likely that Liverpool would score the third goal with Man City really struggling without the forward presence of Haaland but the game ended 2-0 to Liverpool.
Arne Slot’s side moved 11 pts ahead of the second place Arsenal and are now 1/12 favourites to lift the title with all gambling sites without verification, while Man City were joined on 44 pts by Newcastle. Pep’s side have Spurs away from home next while Liverpool host Newcastle at Anfield.
We hope you managed to find a few winners as well as enjoy the great games of football.
