Saturday 8th March Ligue 1 Football Preview

We have three fixtures to look at from the French Ligue 1 and the first of them comes from Roazhon Park where Rennes welcome PSG, Habib Beye’s side are sitting in mid-table and with just ten games of the season to play it looks like that will be their finishing position. They will arrive at this game on the back of two wins at home to Reims (1-0) and away to Montpelier (0-4) so confidence will be high.

The visitors PSG are 13 pts clear at the top and look to have the title in the bag, Luis Enrique’s side’s 22 game unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end midweek when they lost here to Liverpool 1-0. They dominated the match and had VAR go against them twice. They have the return leg next Tuesday so a quick bounce back here will lift their spirits.

The next game of the day comes from the Decathlon Area where Lille will host Montpellier, Bruno Genesio’s side are 5th in the table and pushing for a place in Europe next season. They lost their last game away to top of the table PSG (4-1) but had won their previous two league games. The homeside drew away to Dortmund in the first leg of the knockout phase Champions League tie 1-1 midweek which puts them in a good position for the return leg here next week. The last time these two sides met it ended 2-2 so we wouldn’t be surprised to see goals again.

The visitors Montpellier sit at the foot of the table and have seven points between them and safety with just ten games remaining, Jean Gasset’s side have lost their last five games in the league and scored just once in the process.

The final fixture of the day comes from the Orange Velodrome with Marseille hosting Lens, this fixture always produces goals and with Roberto De Zerbi’s side hoping to keep second place when the season closes a win here is a must. The homeside have won four and lost once of their last five games, the defeat was away to Auxerre (3-0) but they have won their last three home fixtures. The last time these two sides met it was Marseille who won away 3-1 so will they complete the home and away double?

The visitors Lens are 9th in the table, Will Still’s side have lost their last four games conceding 11 goals in the process so could this be another case of defeat. They look likely to finish mid-table when the season comes to a close.
