Wednesday 5th March Champions League Football Preview

This Wednesday we have the second group of the knockout phase of the Champions League ties, the first of the evening will come from the De Kuip Stadium where Feyenoord take on Inter. The two clubs have never met before, Robin Van Persie’s side beat Milan 2-1 on aggregate in the previous round. The Dutch side sit 4th in the Eredivisie and have won two and drawn two of their last three league matches, they beat Sparta at home (3-0), drew away to NAC Breda (0-0), beat Almere City at home (2-1) and then most recently a goalless draw at home to NEC. The homeside will hope recent 32m euro purchase Santiago Gimenez can add to his 7 goal tally.

The visitors Inter finished 4th in the first stage of the competition so this will be their first game in the knockout phase, Simone Inzaghi’s team are top of Serie A but just one point separates them from second place Napoli who they drew against at the weekend 1-1 away from home. The previous two games for Napoli were victories at home to Genoa in the league (1-0) and then a victory at home to Lazio in the quarter final of the Coppa Italia (2-0). The second game of the evening is from the Estadio da Luz with Benfica hosting Barcelona, Bruno Lage’s side are second in the Portuguese top flight but only goal difference separates themselves from Sporting. They beat Monaco 4-3 on aggregate in the previous round and on a eight game unbeaten run in all competitions winning seven and drawing one of those matches. We can expect a tie with plenty of goals as the sides were involved in a nine goal thriller when they met recently.

The visitors Barcelona came from 4-2 down to win 5-4 when the two sides met at this stadium earlier in the competition, Hans-Dieter Flick’s side are top of La Liga but just one point ahead of second place Atletico Madrid currently. The Spanish side have won their last six games in La Liga scoring an impressive 19 goals in the process, they did let a 4-2 lead slip at home to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey slip with the away side completing a 4-4 comeback last week. Hans Flicker’s side will hope to take a lead back to the Nou Camp. Kick off 20.00pm.

The next game to look at is an all German affair with Bayern hosting Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena, the homeside beat Celtic 3-2 on aggregate in the previous round. In the Bundesliga Vincent Kompany’s side are 8 pts clear at top from second place Leverkusen, the two sides met in the league recently when it ended in a goalless draw at the BayArena. We expect there to be goals in this leg though with the homeside having scored seven goals in their last two league games and winning both.

The visitors Leverkusen are having their first knockout phase game having finished 6th in the first stage of the competition. Xabi Alonso’s side are unbeaten in their last eight matches in all competitions winning five and drawing three, they have an extremely strong forward line and we expect Patrik Schick to lead the line who has scored 16 goals so far this season. The other options up top are Florian Wirtz (9) and Victor Boniface (7) who can also hit the net. Kick off 20.00pm

The visitors Liverpool stretched their lead at the top of the Premiership to 13 pts with a win last week, Arne Slots side suffered a FA Cup 4th round exit to Plymouth but they have a EFL Cup final to play against Newcastle in the coming weeks. They arrive here on the back of victories away to Man City (0-2) and at home to Newcastle (2-0) so you can’t question their most recent form.
