Saturday 8th March Televised Premiership Football

We have a triple header of top flight football on television this Saturday, the first game of the day comes from The City Ground where Nottingham Forest will welcome Man City. Nuno Santos side are in 3rd in the table but after a couple of defeats recently the gap between themselves and the chasing pack has closed, Man City are just a point behind in 4th and 5th place Chelsea are only two points behind Forest.

The homeside drew 0-0 with Arsenal in their last home Premiership game but their two previous games were both away resulting in a 2-1 loss to Fulham and a 4-3 loss to Newcastle. The Midlands side did put themselves into the last eight of the FA Cup with a 5-4 victory on penalties to Ipswich at the weekend.

The visitors Man City beat Forest 3-0 when they met at the Etihad before Christmas but Pep Guardiola’s side aren’t having the best season, they were outclassed by Real Madrid in Europe for the second year running being beat home and away and with a enormous gap between Liverpool and themselves they only chance of silverware is the FA Cup now. The Manchester club came from a goal behind to beat Plymouth 3-1 and now set up a visit to Bournemouth in the quarterfinals of the competition.

With Forest needing to get something from this match and Man City needing maximum points to leapfrog their opponents in the table we can expect a few goals here.

The late afternoon fixture comes from the Brentford Community Stadium where Brentford will host Aston Villa, Thomas Frank’s side are 11th in the table and arrive here unbeaten in their last three games. They beat West Ham away (0-1), Leicester away (0-4) and then shared the points at home to in-form Everton (1-1). This fixture has resulted in four, six and three goals on the last three occasions so we can expect a goal fest here.

The visitors Aston Villa are 10th in the table with four points separating the two sides, Unai Emery’s side won 3-1 when the sides met at Villa Park earlier in the season. The Midlands side lost their last league game 4-1 away to Crystal Palace but have since knocked Cardiff out of the FA Cup (2-0) to reach the last eight as well as a first leg victory away to Club Brugge (1-3) in the Champions League. The away side will be hoping they can get another win on the road here.

The evening fixture is from Molineux where Wolves host Everton, Vitor Pereira’s side are 17th in the table but after a couple of recent wins at home to Villa (2-0) and away at Bournemouth (0-1) they have moved five points clear of the bottom three. They have since lost to the former on penalties in the FA Cup last 16 but their priority would be staying in the top flight of English football. They have fixtures away to Southampton, at home to West Ham, away to Ipswich for their next three games so they have a good chance of gaining some points to move further away from the relegation battle.

Their opponents Everton have turned the corner since the reappointment of David Moyes, the Merseyside club were towards the bottom before he arrived. They are only in 16th but with 15 pts between themselves and the drop it’s extremely unlikely they will be playing Championship football next season. They will arrive at this game unbeaten in seven Premiership matches winning four and drawing three, the last time these two sides met Sean Dyche was in charge but Everton did win 4-0 so can they complete the home and away double with their new manager.
